Most popular types of Heavy Equipments for Construction and their uses

Heavy equipment refers to heavy machinery or heavy-duty vehicles used for construction tasks, heavy transportation, and other big operations.

Almost all heavy equipment is painted yellow as it’s the color of caution or danger and thus can be distinguished amongst other equipment to avoid any fatal incidents. Also, yellow is the most visible color even during the night.

Here are the most widely used heavy equipment along with their uses listed in alphabetical order:

Backhoe

1 Backhoe

A widely used heavy equipment, a backhoe is used for several purposes for construction, transportation, and demolition as well. They are also used for digging holes on earth and can carry out small demolitions with ease. They can easily move on rough terrain and can be found in almost all construction sites especially carrying rubble and other construction raw materials as they have multipurpose uses.

Boomlift

2 Boom Lift

Boom lifts are a type of aerial lift used for outdoor industrial and construction work. They can be used as both vertical and horizontal lifts by construction workers to reach high platforms without using the dated ladder. They are controlled by a hydraulic arm and are higher than the scissor lift but are smaller in areas big enough for one construction worker.

Bulldozer

3 Bulldozer

Everyone is aware of this piece of heavy equipment that is used to wreck down almost anything. They are strong machines used for digging, excavating, and leveling materials like soil and debris on roads and construction sites. It is not just used for destruction but the popular use of bulldozer is clearing out the vegetation from construction sites to start new projects. The many uses of bulldozer include construction, farming, civil engineering, demolition, home renovation, and much more.

Carry deck crane

4 Carry deck crane

A carry deck crane is a durable and reliable piece of heavy equipment used for simple tasks of carrying and transporting materials. They are used for industrial and construction purposes by contractors and are very compact as compared to other cranes. It is a small crane with a 360 degrees rotation boom in the center of the machine. It is one of the latest innovations of the construction industry and has become of the favorite heavy equipment for various construction tasks.

Cold planer

5 Cold Planer

Cold planers also knew as asphalt milling machines help in removing pavement or concrete from roads and other surfaces. They are also known as pavement planers, pavement recyclers, mill or asphalt milling machines, or roto-mills. They are widely used for pavement recycling. Cold planing or asphalt milling and profiling, involves removing part of the existing paved asphalt surface with sufficient thickness to create a smooth pavement or full-depth removal of the road surface and courses underneath.

Compactor

6 Compactor

A compactor is a machine that is used to reduce the size of material such as waste material or biomass through compaction. For example, A trash compactor is often used to reduce the volume of trash it produces. Compaction is one of the most critical parts of any construction. There are mainly three types of compactor: Plate compactor, Jumping Jack and Road Roller.

Dragline Excavator

7 Dragline Excavator

A dragline excavator is a piece of heavy equipment used in civil engineering, surface mining, and other excavating jobs. A large excavator uses a dragline to pull a bucket by a wire cable which is lowered down to the material that is supposed to be excavated. Dragline is the largest equipment ever built on this planet and can excavate very deep down the earth.

Drum Roller

8 Drum Roller

Drum roller popularly known as Road roller is used for highway paving and creating foundations for buildings. Single drum rollers are heavier at the front, the place where the drum is. It won't roll over some ground surfaces due to this extra weight. It is huge and quite difficult to maneuver on inclined surfaces if not handled properly.

Dump truck

9 Dump Truck

Dump trucks are heavy equipment used to transport large volumes of raw and loose materials such as dirt, sand, ores, gravel, and demolition waste across mining, civil or major construction sites. Also known as a dumper truck or tipper truck, it is the most widely used piece of heavy equipment or heavy vehicle.

Excavator

10 Excavator

An excavator is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on a construction site which has helped countless projects work more efficiently and effectively. There are seven different types of excavators out there to this day which include crawlable excavator, wheeled excavator, suction excavator, Long reach excavator, dragline excavator, skid steers, and hydraulic shovel.

Feller Buncher

11 Feller Buncher

feller buncher is a self-propelled machine with a cutting head that is capable of holding more than one stem of the tree at a time. The cutting head is used for cutting, holding, and placing the stems on the ground. Mostly used in agriculture for harvesting.

Forklift

12 Forklift

A forklift (also known as a lift truck, fork truck, fork hoist, and forklift truck) is a type of heavy equipment used to lift and move materials over short distances. It has a power-operated forked platform attached at the front that can be raised and lowered for insertion under a cargo to lift or move it. Forklifts are used in various industries including warehouses and other large storage facilities.

Forwarder

13 Forwarder

A forwarder is a heavy vehicle that is used to carry big felled logs from the stump to a roadside landing. Unlike a skidder, a forwarder carries logs clear of the ground, which can reduce soil impacts but tends to limit the size of the logs it can move. They are usually used together with harvesters in cut-to-length logging operations.

Grader

14 Grader

Graders are used in the construction and maintenance of roads, especially gravel roads. In the construction of paved roads, they are used to prepare the base course to create a wide flat surface upon which to place the road surface. Graders are used to "finish grade". The grader blade’s height can be adjusted to achieve a high level of precision.

Harvester

15 Harvester

As the name suggests, a harvester is heavy equipment used in agriculture to reap or harvest crops. Harvesting is a process of gathering ripe produce from the farms. The modern combine harvester is a better version of harvester designed to harvest a variety of grain crops. The name derives from its combining three separate harvesting operations—reaping, threshing, and winnowing—into a single process.

knuckleboom loader

16 Knuckleboom Loader

Knuckleboom loaders are swing machines which have booms for handling logs. They are of three types which can be track-based, wheel based, or trailer mounted. The trailer-mounted version is not capable of moving around a landing by itself. Knuckleboom loaders are designed with fast hydraulics for quick swing and boom movement.

Pile boring machine

17 Pile Boring Machine

A pile driver is a device used to drive piles into soil to provide foundation support for buildings and other infrastrucrures. Installing a bored pile starts with drilling a vertical hole into the soil, using a bored piling machine. The machine can be outfitted with specially designed drilling tools, buckets, and grabs to remove the soil and rock.

A pile driving machine

18 Pile Driving Machine

Pile Driving Machine is a heavy equipment designed to align and hold piles in correct position and to drive the piles into the ground. There are two main types of pile driving machines: traditional pile drivers and vibratory pile drivers.

A motor grader

19 Motor Grader

It is a heavy equipment which has a long blade used to create flat surface during grading. Also known as Road Grader, it can be used to cutting, spreading and levelling of materials during Construction. There are two types of Motor Graders- Rigid frame motor grader and Articulated frame motor grader.

A skidder in a forest during logging operations

20 Skidder

Another useful heavy equipment, a skidder is used to pull down trees in forests during logging operations. This process is called skidding where the tree logs are transported from the logging sites to another location.

A telehandler

21 Telehandlers

A telehandler is the most versatile heavy equipment used in construction and mining activities. It is a hydraulic lifting equipment connected to a telescopic booth used to lift all types of materials for transportation over short distances. It is especially used to clear constrution sites of the debris and other leftovers. There are two types of telehgandlers: Rotating and Non-rotating.

A tower crane at a construction site

22 Tower Cranes

Tower cranes are probably the most enormous types of heavy equipment there is. They are mainly used for transporting and lifting capacity from one place to another place and for mega construction, bridges, and the largest building construction site

Trencher creating a trench in the soil

23 Trenchers

A trencher is a type of heavy construction equipment used to dig trenches, especially for laying pipes or electrical cables, for installing drainage, or in preparation for trench warfare. Similar to an excavator, a trencher rips up the soil and any roots in the way to create a trench. There are two types of Trenchers: Walk Behind trenchers and Ride On Trenchers.
